Coach made a large tactical error during the pregame talk for this game. He told us that he was starting all the Varsity guys (Paul, Jeremy, Don, John, and LeWinter), but that they would only play the first five minutes and then the real team would take over. It seemed like a good plan to me, actually, since that way we could show him how good we were without these guys, and then they couldn't complain too much since they started. We figured to blow Redlands out anyhow, since we beat them twice last year, and their team has only declined. How wrong we were! Varsity started out by getting down 9-0 on three possesions! Those little bastards could shoot! Two of their threes were with a man out on them, in their face! It was really impressive. By the time five minutes were up, we were down 11-8, and Coach showed no signs of putting in the bench. I played for about 12 minutes all told, and was 0-2 with a really nice assist, one shot that was immediately tipped back by Mason, and another from the baseline that only a mother could love. We played tight man to man defense the whole game, without helping out, and they played a 2-3 zone. We could not hit our shots, but they hit all of theirs! Near the end of the game, they went on a rampage, and our five or six point lead turned into a two point deficit thanks to their 85% accuracy from behind the arc. Paul Seilo, who had missed about three out of five free throws so far was at the line shooting two, and made them both, tying the game. This was with about two minutes left! Then, there was a time out, and Ryan Gilbert gave me his contact to hold (which I was a little nervous about, since don't you need that to see?) and then got a steal on the inbounds pass and was fouled while shooting! He stood up to the line, and confidently (blindly I thought!) gave us the two point lead. The Redlanders came down and nailed a three right in Seilo's face. So we were down by one! But Seilo got fouled again and again made both shots! We had a one-point lead. They failed to score, and we did, giving us a three-point edge with the ball out of bounds and their possesion with 15 seconds left! They came down the court, and passed and passed, unable to find an open three. The score was 73-70, when Ryan Gilbert fouled an attempt.. sending their man to the line for THREE shots with 2 seconds to go. A lot of pressure I must say! And finally our crowd made some noise! And the guy missed his first one! Yay! And made the second, and then missed the last on purpose in the hopes that he could get the rebound and tie the game. But we won.
